Stone the crows, they're nearly here!

Yes, I'm talking about the Olympics, the London Olympics, the 2012 Games. They are nearly here. "Don't panic, Captain Mainwaring….."!

How on earth is London going to cope, how will the British handle them?

And we don't really want to have to think about paying for them, do we?

We're a curious race the British ! We're blessed and shamed, rejoiced and humbled, constantly changing but ever the same.

Over the years the people of the United Kingdom , and London in particular, have blended patiently into a fusion of creed and colour; a community of cultures blooming in the spirit of inclusion. A sign no doubt of a confident, mature society? Why then the underlying struggle with our own sense of identity?

The traditional notion of being "British" seems to have gone. What does it even mean to be British ? Does being a Londoner mean what it once was ?

Respect, and even passion, was once felt for one flag, the union flag , or the union jack as it's known to most; and we sung to the rafters one anthem, the national anthem ?

Sadly, our collective pride in Britain has faded like an old photograph. So has the pride in our history . Do we, I wonder, still have the same love and respect for our ancient capital city, London , where the 2012 Olympic Games will take place?

If for no other reason than to honour the sacrifices made by our forefathers and in anticipation of the efforts soon to be made by our young athletes, we must never be anything other than proud to be Londoners and proud to be British !

Our capital city, London is a heart that beats for all of us that share these islands. It's a place that millions of visitors travel from all four corners of the world to see.

They can't all be wrong….can they?

London is a wonderful place indeed.

With its green, scented parks epitomised by Hyde Park and St James's Park , the smart Victorian squares where, if you close your eyes, you can almost hear the clattering wheels of horse-drawn cabs. London's attractions and sightseeing opportunities are limitless.

We never tire of the ancient churches with happy, pealing bells contrasting with the mournful tones of Big Ben , standing guard over the Houses of Parliament , the cradle of democracy, the Mother of All Parliaments .

Old Father Thames keeps rolling along spanned by the iconic Tower Bridge , and its glorious companion, the Tower of London . East End street markets are filled with laughter and Cockney calls to take home never-to-be-repeated bargains.

London Olympics
The Cockneys still swagger cheekily along narrow cobbled streets, drink warm beer and play darts in riverside pubs. Jellied eels are still hungrily sought and relished at Petticoat Lane market of a Sunday morning.

On a sunny, summer's day, London is a glorious, evocative place, perhaps the most wonderful place in the world to be. It's a place that we should all be proud of and enjoy to the full.

Perhaps, the 2012 Olympic Games will become a beacon to light the way back to our self-understanding and national pride.

Ahead of these Olympic Games, we should perhaps take a deep breath and re-examine who we, the British, are and where we have come from. In this way, we may enjoy all the more this magnificent spectacle in our lifetime.

Let's look forward to hosting the 2012 Olympics and show the world what we can really do . With the backdrop of London, the support and humour of its people and, with the help of our wonderful young athletes, we will be the envy of the world.

We're Londoners, we're British and we're proud of it!
