London - Chilling and Shopping

"Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London.
No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford"
.

So said one Samuel Johnson in 1777.

Now assuming his observation was valid, it was said a very long time ago and, as we all know, things change!

So does London today have the same attractions it clearly had for Dr Johnson?

One obvious answer is that, particularly today, we all have different tastes and therefore different opinions on what is attractive.

For example, some people will feel a night at a London opera to be the next best thing to heaven .

Others would see the experience as something worse than a visit to the dentist !

Likewise, an open air Festival of Rock in London's Hyde Park , would attract tens of thousands of happy, ecstatic fans.Others would see it as a drug-riddled 'noise-fest' to be avoided at any cost.

As someone (other than Mr Johnson and somewhat less articulate) once wrote "One man's meat is another man's poison" .

Perhaps that's not the most complimentary way to describe London but the fact is, London has something for EVERYONE . All tastes, all sexes (and we mean all), all religions and all nationalities.

The joy of London is being able to choose what you want to do , find where you can do it , and go and enjoy the experience.

London is, of course, a long way from being perfect (some will say a very long way!). The traffic is awful, there's not enough waste bins or public loos and public transport is not brilliant at the end of the evening.

But the place is gritty, 'all human life is there' as somebody (also not very memorably) once stated, and we like to think that most visitors leave London feeling excited , enlived and enlightened by the experience.

That's what we like to think, anyway!

We at www.LondonFreeandEasy.com hope our articles will enlighten you, give you food for thought or just allow your mind to meander over the various possibilities of what London has to offer you on your next visit, hopefully one of many !

We personally think Dr Johnson still has a point, more than 230 years later!
